Final Rule: HM-230: New Radiation Packaging and Transport Requirements

On January 26, 2004, the U.S. DOT and NRC each published a final rule that brought significant changes to the packaging and transport of Class 7 radioactive material (69 FR 3631 and 3697, respectively). Those affected by these changes have only until October 1, 2004 to update their Class 7 packaging and transport systems to the new requirements. DOT's early voluntary compliance option began on February 25th; the NRC, however, did not provide an early voluntary compliance option. The author's presentation is exhaustive in its explanation of the new provisions. Further, a table is provided as an overview of the rule by section.
