On April 13, 2012, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) published Safety Advisory 2012-01 in the Federal Register (77 FR 22381) reminding shippers and consignees of tank cars containing odorized liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) of the importance of taking actions to ensure that a sufficient level of odorant remains in the LPG throughout the entire transportation cycle. The safety advisory explains that odorants are normally added to shipments of LPG because it is a colorless and odorless gas. Due to a number of causes, "odorant fade" may occur during storage and transportation to the extent that there are diminished levels or an absence of odorant in a shipment.
