DROP TEST REQUIREMENTS FOR TYPE A PACKAGES

A customer of Robatel Technologies inquired about shipping a type A package without an upper impact limiter. Further it was asked if the drop test requirements for Type A packages would hold for this configuration. Specifically, would it be necessary to drop test in every orientation if that orientation was not incident to "normal" transportation but would only occur in an accident situation. The package in question is massive (roughly 7 feet around and 14 feet high) and only one is attached when hauled on a 45-foot flatbed. Dropping this whole configuration the 0.3 m required of a package this size (＞15,000 kg) is a challenge. The full interpretation has pictures of the configuration. IAEA referenced this situation in SSG-26 §722.6 in which the difficulty of performing the drop test in all possible orientations for large and complex packages is recognized. The IAEA suggests that designs requiring approval of the Competent Authority should be tested in the most damaging orientation regardless of package size or aspect ratio.
