Natural (methane) gas is used by virtually all sectors of the economy mainly for heating and electricity generation, but also as a raw material (feedstock) to produce chemicals, fertilizer, and hydrogen. When natural gas cannot be moved to market by pipeline, it is liquified (LNG) to reduce its volume by cooling to -260℉ (-162℃) so that it can be transported by truck, train, or vessel. As a cryogenic material, surface transportation of LNG in the United States is currently carried in insulated, pressurized packagings like an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) tank or a MC-338 cargo tank.
