Seth Giddings begins his study with an examination of a family photograph of his two boys playing Nintendo DS consoles - in the wilderness, on a camping trip. He then conjures images of thermal vents, of deep ocean creatures, 'among the very few species that do not rely on the sun's energy for their life', drawing a comparison with 'the children in the photograph[,] clinging to their devices and their life-giving cables and plugs, drawing imaginative sustenance from an environments utterly alien to the sunlight, trees, breeze and grass that surrounds them' (2). Such is the nature of Gameworlds: Virtual Media and Children's Everyday Play - rich with metaphor, surprise and (so very thankfully) good writing.
