Letters of Protection: Ethical and Legal Financial Considerations for Forensic Psychologists (Revised)

Attorneys often request that mental health practitioners accept a “letter of protection,” which delays payment for professional services until the legal case has been completed. In the context of providing legal and ethical protection to the forensic psychologist, this article explains the potential for violation of ethics, such as conflict of interest and loss of objectivity, and provides legal principles for understanding the terms and conditions necessary for an ethically and legally appropriate written fee agreement.
