Johanna Martha Resig was born in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 27 May 1932. She attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1954 and her Master of Science in 1956 under the direction of Dr. Orville Bandy. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was also a member of Sigma Xi, the science honorary.
