There is, indeed, a shortage of methods to validate, verify, or simply show the performance of multidimensional wildland fire models under certain criteria. Many approaches are possible, but this study will undertake total shape and size of area burned as the metric criteria with such models. In particular, two area shape and size metrics are presented for application to a fire area simulator. Both metrics are then analyzed to show which one is better suited for predictions that have protruding fire fronts and overshoots. In addition, a numerical experiment is presented herein, which simply demonstrates how such metrics can be utilized to validate fire area simulators.
