ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY SHIPPING - IMPORTANT CHAPTER IN MERCHANT FLEET EDUCATION

Seaborne shipping is the most efficient way to transport cargo over greater distances. Along with globalisation it will undergo further increases in future. New ships will have to be built and the number of ships trading will also enlarge. Shipping is a precondition for the economic prosperity in the world. In many ways, however, shipping is contributing to the pollution of the environment. The air is polluted by burning fuel and waste, the water at the open sea, in coastal areas and also in the ports is polluted by oily wastes, underwater paints, noxious liquids and other harmful substances as well as by sewage and garbage from ships. Losses of ships and of its cargo may lead to disastrous environmental consequences.
