Legislation On Cosmetic Products In Regards With Nitrosamines

Nitrosamines are classified by IARC as Group 2B carcinogens. Nitrosamines might be present in cosmetics either as impurities or as products of reaction between secondary amines and nitrosation systems. This is the reason that in the European legislation on Cosmetic products and Regulation No 36/2005 in Bulgaria are set limit values of impurities of nitrosamines in cosmetic products. The aim of the study was to test the concentration of nitrosamines in Bulgarian "rinse-off products. Raw materials (Bronopol and Diethanolamide of coconut fatty acid) and 7 rinse-off cosmetic products with and without risk combination of nitrosation systems were analysed. High performance liquid chromatography with UV detector was used. A standard solution of N-nitrosodiethanolamine (detection peak with retention time 2.33 min ) was used for comparison of the samples. The limit of detection of the method was determined to 14 * 10~-9 g/ml (ng/kg) (0,0000014%). The results of the testing showed that analysed Bulgarian cosmetic products complied to the requirements of the cosmetic legislation and did not contain nitrosamines above the limit of detection of the method. The analysis of the data showed that at the used concentration of substances, even in combination with nitrosation systems, the health risk for consumers was negligible.
