HEAVY METALS ANALYSIS OF SOME WILD EDIBLE MUSHROOMS

The concentrations of heavy metals in 4 species of wild-grown edible mushrooms (Boletus badius, Boletus edulis, Agaricus arvensis and Armillaria mellea) were studied. The mushroom and soil samples were collected in the forests near the industrial zone of Ploiesti and deep in the same forests. Concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn, Cr and Ni) in samples were determined by using a Perkin-Elmer Analyst 700 atomic absorption spectrometer after nitric acid digestion. The results indicated that Cu and Cd in soil and mushroom samples collected near the industrial zone of the city are higher than in the samples collected from the deep in the forests. The level of Cd was the highest in Armillaria mellea (6.2 ±8.5 μg/g) and the level of Cu was the highest in Boletus badius (217 ± 4.5 μg/g). The two species (5. badius and A. mellea) show a strong accumulation of Cu and Cd, up to the concentration in the soil. As a conclusion, when people consume wild edible mushrooms they must avoid the zones with high degree of pollution because the mushrooms have a high capacity to accumulate pollutants from soil.
