ENVIRONMENTAL VIRAL FACTORS, MAIN CONTRIBUTORS IN CERVICAL CARCINOGENESIS

Since the discovery made by George Papanicolau, early detection of intraepithelial pre-invasive lesions of the uterine cervix has led to a significant reduction in mortality from cervical squamous cancer. The role of cervico-vaginal cytology (CVC) has had a tremendous impact in this preventive undertaking. CVC represents a major diagnostic tool in the identification of the most important borderline lesions of the uterine cervix with an excellent contribution in preventing the malignant progression of the precancerous lesions towards invasive cancer. It is well known today that HPV virus type 16 and 18, carry a high risk of developing cancer. They cause the chromosomal aneuploidy of the epithelial cells of the cervix which is a substantial environment factor in developing the malignant progression. Our study aims at identifying typical cyto-morphologic anomalies in Pap-smears, which define the borderline between the benign and malignant lesions in the cervical region contaminated by HPV infection. After the examination of the Pap smear, the women who presented high grade cellular lesions were followed up by colposcopy. In the cases where colposcopy confirmed the cytology results, cervical biopsy was performed. The women equipped with all of the three examinations, represent the core of our study.
