PROTECTION AND DEVELOPMENT FOR FAMOUS HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CITY DISTRICTS IN MACAU

The historic district in Macau remains constantly changeable with the elapse of time. Its unique architectural space and street space collectively compose the commercial district of the Ruinas de Sao Paulo. The present study attempts to prove the spatial modes of the commercial district of the Ruinas de Sao Paulo methodologically with space syntax, axis analysis method. The study particularly selects three points of time, i.e. 1912, 1986, and 2015, respectively, in order to study the spatial structural changes of the district, and it attempts to predict the development tendency of this commercial district. The research discovers that the district centre has been gradually shifted to its peripheral district through the on-site measure and observation, after the statistical analysis on the internal spatial structure of the district, function, traffic and the street scale: from linear blocks to block districts. The space of the district has been influenced by the peripheral sub-district, contributing to the influx of passengers and the change of the sites. This proves that the commercial district can guide the extensive development of the peripheral district. The study will forge the external guiding measures of the streets through the district coordination in the future, with the focus on the streets less unknown and the historic conservation districts.
