ASSESSING THE SELF-PURIFICATION CAPACITY OF SURFACE WATERS IN MLADEZHKA RIVER

The organic and inorganic pollutants in most of the rivers in Bulgaria are beyond the self-purification capacities of the rivers which has caused serious pollution to their water bodies. Four points in Mladezhka River were selected from which samples of water were taken for the pollutant test: Sample No 1 - springs of Mladezhka River; Sample No 2 - upstream, before the village of Mladezhko; Sample No 3 - middle stream, Kukurinkovi laki place, after the village of Mladezhko; Sample No 4 - downstream, before flowing into Veleka River. The contaminant organic matter removal was used as water self-purification parameter. The results indicate that the Mladezhka River has a great ability to purify the organic pollutants in the range of 22 to 30%.
