CIRCULATING RESPIRATORY VIRUSES IN AYDIN PROVINCE

Acute respiratory infections (ARITs) are a major cause of morbidity, hospitalisation and mortality in both children and adults. Their accurate diagnosis is essential to the patient management. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the respiratory viruses which cause acute respiratory tract infections with respect to types, ratio, co-infections and seasonal distributions. A total of 2621 patients with acute respiratory infections were enrolled to the study between March 2013 and December 2017. Patients data were evaluated retrospectively from hospital database. Of the patients, 1113 (42.5%) were female and 1508 (57.5 %) were male, while 2163 (82.5%) were children, and 458 (17.4%) were adults. The diagnose of respiratory viruses was performed with a commercial multiplex real time Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Of the 2621 samples, 1097 (41.9 %) were positive for at least one respiratory virus. The co-infection analysis showed 23.7 % of double, triple or quadraple infections. Rhinovirus was the most common virus in the studied samples. The ratio of influenza virus was found higher in adults than in children. Early detection of viral agents in respiratory infections is crucial for the implementation of timely and appropriate treatment and to reduce unnecessary antibiotic therapy.
