Daniel Bodansky's textbook aims to explain to the neophyte the 'process by which international environmental law is developed, implemented and enforced' (p x). It therefore differentiates itself from existing treatises, that focus on the substance of international environmental law (such as Birnie, Boyle and Redgwell, International Law and the Environment, OUP 2009; and Sands, Principles of International Environmental Law, CUP 2003), by replying instead to basic questions as to the nature of international environmental law, its practical operation, its actual impact on State practice and its effectiveness. Drawing on his first-hand experience as US government negotiator, NGO adviser and UN consultant, Bodansky provides an insider's account of the life-cycle of international environmental law-from multilateral negotiations and treaty design to implementation and compliance.
