This paper discusses Professor Ralph L. Webb's pioneering contributions to enhanced boiling and condensation, development of plate-fin surfaces and performance evaluation criteria (PEC) for enhanced surfaces. In particular, the status of these technologies when Professor Webb began his work, his contributions to these areas, and what else remains to be accomplished before these technologies can be used to their full potential in the petrochemical industry are addressed. The authors have been witnesing and contributing to the grwoth in these technologies in the petrochemical industry. and contributing to the grwoth in these technologiesin the petrochemical industyr. However, primarily owing to the lack of operating data, and to the complications of foulin, corrsion and erosion phenomena often prevalent in these industries, there exists a reulctance in accepting theste technologies.
