The vast majority of existing energy storage business models are based on single service use cases, which hold the promise of providing return of the investment under favourable conditions. To be successful under other circumstances as well, multi-service use cases must be developed; an operation that is generally considered to increase revenues of a project. As such services have different characteristics, optimisation of the operation is necessary to succeed. The present paper examines energy storage owned by the distribution system operator, an investor with adequate financial resources to install such technologies. In the first part of the paper grid services provided by the storage are defined and compared using a use case matrix, which takes into consideration technical boundary conditions and compatibilities of these services. Then a framework for business case development is presented, utilizing costs and potential revenues generated by the provision of stacked services. Business cases are validated via grid simulations of a low-voltage subnetwork. The second part of the paper presents the results, which indicate that an adequately selected portfolio of stacked services is profitable from the aspect of the storage owner.
