The second edition of Peter Cameron's Competition in Energy Markets is much more than simply an update of the well-received first edition. The considerably expanded text abandons the historical approach adopted in the first edition, which charted the evolution of laws promoting competition in European energy markets; with the market orientation of EU energy law now firmly established, the second edition instead focuses on its operation. Two themes are emphasised throughout the book. The first relates to what Cameron terms 'problems of application' of the new market paradigm. The creation of an internal energy market has proved to be more difficult than anticipated, with only limited competition across national boundaries and considerable evidence of anti-competitive practices and ongoing instances of national protectionism.
