DISTRIBUTION AND CONSERVATION STATUS OF SELECTED AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES IN THE PIEDMONT FO SOUTH CAROLINA

We present new data on the distribution and status of three species of amphibians and 11 species of reptiles from the Piedmont of western South Car- olina. Herpetofaunal surveys and examination of museum specimens conducted from 1982 through 1996 revealed range extensions for green treefrogs (Hyla ci- nerea), American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), yellow-bellied sliders (Trachemys scripta scripta), and red-bellied water snakes (Nerodia erythrogaster erythrogaster), but indicated population declines for eastern coachwhips (Masti- cophis flagellum flagellum) and timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus).
