Amid concerns about the health of the U.S. broadcasting industry in the wake of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the sluggish transition to digital broadcasting, this year's National Association of Broadcasters trade show (NAB2002) was smaller than last year's event. The international broadcast equipment exhibition drew 1,258 participating companies this year, 10 percent fewer than in 2001. NAB2002 took place from April 7 through 11 in Las Vegas, the United States. The show began with the opening of the South Hall, a new wing on the Las Vegas Convention Center, the afternoon before the official opening of the main hall on April 8. Last September's events shaped the mood of the trade show. For example, before the keynote speeches on April 8, visitors joined in singing the U.S. national anthem. They also offered silent prayers for the victims of the attacks, especially engineers and others in the broadcast industry. The attacks on the World Trade Center destroyed digital broadcast transmission facilities inside the buildings that collapsed.
