Taiwan Builds Flat-Panel Industry on Solid Manufacturing Base

Taiwan is, with Korea and Japan, one of the three major centers of flat-panel display manufacturing in the world. Established through initiatives of the government and entering a period of growth, Taiwan's flat-panel display industry is on course to strengthen its position not only in the area of panel production, but also in the area of domestic production of related components and materials, such as color filters, glass baseboards, backlight modules and driving ICs. Taiwan is already well established as a production base for such products as personal computers, office automation equipment, conventional phones, mobile phones, electronic toys and digital cameras. Recently, the country's promotion efforts have focussed on domestic production of flat-panel displays, which are emerging as essential components in many electronic appliances. Promotions include efforts to entice capital and technologies from other countries.
