DVC Market Gets Ready to Take Off

The demand for DVCs (digital video cameras) is expanding globally. Growth is expected to pick up speed this year as more products with hi-vision compatibility, higher pixel CCD and diversified recording media are introduced. What's more, the DVC and digital camera stole the show at the PMA2004, a special exhibit held in Las Vegas. The number of DVCs shipped in Japan in 2003 increased 11 percent from the previous year to 1.64 million units, the highest yearly total in 5 years. Demand is strong in Europe and North America and growing in Asia and the Middle East. Annual demand in China, for example, increased 40 percent to about 500,000 units, according to Sony. Victor Company of Japan also reports robust demand in Russia and the Middle East. The bullish news is expected to push total worldwide shipments in 2003 to 7 million units, a 20 percent increase from the 5 million units shipped in 2002. Expectations are even higher this year, with Canon predicting the global market will expand to 10 million units.
