Carriers Launch 3G Networks, Vendors Introduce 3G Handsets

The mobile phone industry event 3G World Congress held in November 2004 in Hong Kong throbbed with upbeat expectations for the mass market of third-generation or 3G-enabled mobile phone networks and handsets. Telecommunications infrastructure providers, chipset manufacturers, software developers and mobile technology solutions vendors are looking forward to an even bigger participation in next month's 3GSM Congress in Cannes, France. The positive outlook in the telecommunications market has been driven largely by the exponential growth in cellular phone subscribers worldwide. Nokia projects the 2004 level of over 1.5 billion subscribers to grow to 2 billion by 2007. Telecommunication networks are therefore gearing up to offer High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) networks for wireless carriers around the world deploying CDMA2000 IXEV-DO (1xEvolution Data Optimized), a 3G mobile standard, to ramp up the migration of subscribers from 2.5G to 3G.
