Industry standards play a critical role in the wireless marketplace, because they allow wireless systems to communicate with each other easily. The IEEE802.11 series of standards essentially cover wireless local area networks (WLANs), whereas the IEEE802.15 specifications, for example, cover wireless personal area networks (WPANs). Specifications in the 802.11 series include the IEEE802.11 a for 54Mbps transmission in the 5GHz band, IEEE802.11b for UMbps transmission in the 2.4GHz band, and the IEEE802.11 g for 54Mbps transmission in the 2.4GHz band. Other specifications in the 802.11 series address quality-of-service issues (IEEE802.11e) and technical details like those for the media access control (MAC) layer (IEEE802.11d).
