Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. has partnered with Volkswagen (VW) group on the joint development of next-generation lithium-ion battery system for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The company also said it would strengthen the partnership, accelerate the development of new technology and make additional investments to improve the production system, as part of its growth strategy on HEV-use battery business. At present, Sanyo co-develops with VW the HEV-use nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery system, with mass production slated for next spring.
