Solar cells use sunlight to generate electric power, and as they require simple maintenance and management, solar cells are being recognized as an effective alternative source of clean, renewable energy in various countries. In Japan, research and development for other energy sources aside from petroleum intensified because of the two series of oil crises that occurred in the 1970s. During that time, solar cells were identified as one alternative energy source. The solar cell market has been growing consistently for the past several years especially with the backing of the feed-in tariff system, which originated in Europe. This trend has prompted various equipment manufacturers to provide integrated production equipment, targeting new solar cell manufacturers that are expected to enter the expanding market.
