摘要

Managing and supporting electronic resources are important library service functions that continue to increase in both complexity and scope. The author examined and analyzed electronic resource access problems reported through the virtual reference system in a large academic library system to determine core competencies, that is, the specific skill sets, based on data and practical experience, which account for ongoing success in providing this type of access support service. Since the library-specific organizational context is a medical library, these competencies are mapped to professional competencies delineated by the Medical Library Association. Suggestions for staff training to build access support services are offered.
