Halaychik and Reagan's Library Licensing would appear on the surface to be a highly specialized technical book useful only to librarians, or library staff responsible for ordering/maintaining subscriptions. Nothing could be further from the truth. The authors have written a clear, concise, and informative work that comprehensively introduces one of the most important aspects of librarianship: the art of making and understanding contracts, particularly with journal and database providers. This book is extremely useful for every library-academic or public-that deals with these issues. Library Licensing is 170 pages total. It is organized into five chapters, starting with defining common contract clauses and continuing into chapters on how contracts are organized and managed. The book ends with sections on administering contracts and a sampling of several different types of contracts including a lease, hotel rate agreement (invaluable for those planning on hosting a conference), and a standard payable contract, as well as a contract review checklist used by the University of Tennessee's System Administration's Office of Procurement Services. Each chapter also includes a 'Notes' section that provides additional relevant resources (websites, books, etc.), which is always useful and appreciated. The book is logically arranged, and it flows well.
