As weapons get meaner and smarter (see "Waltz of the Toreador," JED, January 2001, p. 43), warning and hit-avoidance systems are becoming standard equipment for naval vessels and military aircraft. Land systems — combat vehicles and installations — have lagged in developing similar defenses. To defend against the growing inventories of standoff weapons, hit avoidance for ground-pounders becomes a necessity.
