PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOIL SAMPLES OF PERAMBALUR AREA, TAMIL NADU

Soil samples were taken from different cultivating lands of eight villages of Perambalur area, Tamil Nadu. The samples were systematically analysed for temperature, colour, texture, pH, acidity, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium and total organic matter. All the soil samples were dark in colour. The pH values varied from 5.2 to 8.6. The values of calcium ranged from 7 to 521 mg/100 g and magnesium from 6.1 to 304.6 mg/100 g. The samples had low values of organic matter.
