STATISTICAL STUDIES ON THE GROUND WATER QUALITY IN RURAL AREAS AROUND ANGUL-TALCHER INDUSTRIAL ZONE, ORISSA

The quality of ground water samples collected from 7 representative dug wells in rural areas around Angul-Talcher industrial zone was assessed in the rainy, winter and summer from July 2001 to June 2003. A total of 20 physico-chemical characteristics were analysed. Six parameters: pH, COD, BOD, DO, Cr~(+6)and SO_4were found within and six parameters: SS, TDS, Turb, EC, Na and K were above the desirable limit for drinking purpose throughout the study period. A systematic correlation and regression study was undertaken. Several pairs of water quality parameters were observed significantly correlated. Most significant linear relationship were found among the pairs : (SS, Turb), (TDS, EC), (TDS, Cl), (EC, Cl), (COD, BOD) and (Na, K) throughout the study period.
