Physico chemical parameters were estimated in sago factory effluents collected from Salem, Tamil Nadu and effluent was diluted in varying concentrations (5.10,25,50,75&100%)and used for the seeds (Vigna mungo & V. radiata). Starch degraders were isolated from the' same effluent (Alcaligenes, Bacillus & Pseudomonas sp). Combination of degrading organisms including Bacillus and Pseudomonas and Alcaligenes were inoculated into the effluents. The untreated effluent used showed seed germination of V.mungo (80%) and V.radiata (88%), and a poor response against control seeds. The treated effluent showed better response in seed germination of V.Mungo (84%) than control seeds. Effluent treated / untreated plants did not influence germination in V radiata. When shoot length and root length of V. mungo were measured at 10% concentration of treated effluent, there is a recovery of 0.9 cm of shoot length and 6 cm of root length over control. As for V. radiata, there is loss of only 1.2 cm for shoot length over control at 10% concentration treated effluent, while root length was not affected by the effluent at all. The effluent influenced both germination and shoot / root lengths to some extent in V. mungo, whereas it has little effect on V. radiata. However above 10% of effluent, bacterial treatment could not recover the growth of shoot / root in both the plants tested.
