EFFECT OF DIFFERENT GROWTH REGULATORS ON ROOTING, SPROUTING AND SURVIVAL OF BAMBOO CUTTINGS

The field experiment was conducted at Dapoli, Maharashtra during 1999-2000 to study the effect of growth regulators on rooting, sprouting and survival of bamboo cuttings. Among growth regulators tried, Indolebutyric acid (IBA) + coumarin showed the highest mean rooting percentage (53.3%) which was followed by IBA 100 ppm (48.3%). Rooting percentage was the highest in Bambusa striata (57.1%) followed by Pseudoxytenanthera ritcheyi (35.7%) and the poorest in B. balcooa (2.1%). Among the interaction effects, the highest rooting percentage (80%) was observed in B. striata when cuttings were treated with IBA 100 ppm, followed by IBA + boric acid and IBA + coumarin. In B. striata, the highest percent sprouting (80%) was recorded with IB A 100 ppm, IBA + boric acid and IBA + coumarin treatment. Among growth regulator mixture, IBA + Coumarin treated cuttings showed the highest percent survival owing to better root as well as shoot development. In B. striata, highest percent survival was obtained with treatment of IBA 100 ppm (80%), IBA + Boric acid (80%) and IBA + Coumarin (80%). In P. ritcheyi survival was maximum (65%) in IBA 100 ppm treated cuttings.
