ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF SELECTED INDIAN MEDICINAL PLANTS

Barks of six plants, Azardirchata indica A. Juss, Terminalia arjuna Roxb. Ex DC; Wt.& Am, Mimosops elengi L., Moms alba L., Acacia leucophloea (Roxb.) Willd. and Terminalia chebula Retz., were screened for potential antibacterial activity in both aqueous and methanolic solvents. Antibacterial activity was tested against 5 bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus sublilis, Pseudomonas florescence, Klebsellia pneumonia and Proteus vulgaris. The maximum antibacterial activity recorded from methanol extracts against E. coli (18 mm), B. sublillis (20 mm), P. florescence (16 mm), K. pneumonia (13 mm) and P. vulgaris (14 mm). Terminalia chebula showed strong inhibitory activity against all tested bacterial strains. Therefore, this can be selected for further investigation to determine its therapeutic potential.
