A process for the preparation of herbal extracts of some indian medicinal plants species of traditional ayurveda, use thereof for antimycobacterial activity
Development of new chemotherapeutic drugs is the need of the hour to improve tuberculosis (TB) control, particularly in the developing world. In the present invention, methanolic extracts of 8 medicinal herbs, which have been described as ethno-botanicals in India, were screened for their antitubercular activity. The species tested were: Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Gurmar {Gymnema sylvestre), Mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Gorakhmundi (Sphaeranthus indicus), Shankhpushpi {Evolvulus alsinoides), Dashmoola/Dasamula (roots of ten herbs, viz., Desmodium gangeticum, Uraria picta, Solarium surattense, Solarium indicum, Tribulus terrestris, Aegle marmelos, Premna mucronata, Oroxylum indicum, Gmelina arborea, Stereospermum suaveolens). The crude extract of herbs showed MIC of 166.5 u.g/ml against M. tuberculosis isolated from sputum specimen. Their sensitivity to the reference antibiotics was checked by Ciprofloxacin (2 (µg/ml), Ethambutol (2 µg/ml), Kanamycin (4 (µg/ml) and Rifampicin (8 µg/ml). Ciprofloxacin (2 µg/ml) showed anti-tubercular activity.
