A simple, rapid, and sensitive multi-residue method has been utilized for the analysis of 5 pesticides in fifty vegetable samples (beans hrinjal, cabbage & carrot) from different Markets of Bangalore urban district of Kamataka during 2011 by gas liquid chromatography equipped with electron-capture detector. Recovery studies were carried out at 0.01,0.5 and 1.0 mg kg~(-1) fortification levels of each compound and the recoveries obtained ranged from 743% to 94.5% with relative standard deviations less than 7.8%. The method established excellent linearity over the rangv considered 0.01-1.0 mg kg-' with correlation coefficient >0.998 and the detection and quantification limits for the pesticides studied varied from 0.003 to 0.008 mg kg~(-1) and 0.01 to 0.02 mg kg~(-1) respectively. Among the tested vegetables, 17(34%) samples pyrethroids were detected in the range of 0.01 -0.662 mg kg~(-1). However, none of the samples were found to contain the residues of these pyrethroids above their respective maximum residue limits(MRLs).Based on the results, the potential toxicologica! risk of human exposure to the pyrethroid insecticides measured in vegetables appears to be least in the study area. It is therefore recommended to carry out extensive monitoring studies covering all the vegetable crops from different agro-climatic regions of the Karnataka to know the exact concentration of pesticide contamination.
