Microbiological quality of drinking water supplies of Warangal (A.P) was assessed monthly from September 2007 to August 2009. In the principal source of water supply Kakatiya canal, the total coliforms, faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci, staphylococci and thermophiles were highest in number during July to September 2009. Microbial populations were recorded to be lesser in canal water than the two storage tanks that indicate that the water in these two storage tanks is contaminated in situ. Further, Bhadrakali tank water was found to be heavily loaded by microbes compared to that of Waddepalli tank for which the reason appears to be it is located in the centre of the city as a result of which it is subjected to all types of human activities. Analysis of tap water collected from different domestic and public supply points revealed that the treatment processes appear to be effective partially but not total. Municipal drinking water supplied to Warangal city was found to contain more microbes than the water supplied to Hanamkonda and Kazipet, may be the reason that it receives the water from Bhadrakali tank. Different fiIteration methods in different house holds showed that filteration methods have considerably reduced the number of different microbial groups. Can water processed through reverse osmosis and supplied by different companies was not free from microorganisms. Chlorination of water has shown more effect on bacteria that grow at 20℃ rather than bacteria thai grow at 37℃.
