Whose Line Is It? Plagiarism in Economics

In this paper, we report the results of a survey concerning the nature and the extent of plagiarism in the economics profession Perhaps more importantly, we report on the practices and policies that professional journals use to curb plagiarism. The motivation for the paper can be understood by reading the following verbatim excerpts from a set of e-mail communications between one author of this papei and the editor of a well-known economics journal. The discussion concerned a referee report that theauthor was preparing for the editor. In order to provide confidentiality, the names have been removed and are indicated by a set of brackets [].
