According to the European Commission, financial markets infrastructure is like the plumbing in a building, "vital, but unglamorous and forgotten until something goes wrong."1 The events of the recent crisis have shown how appropriate this comparison is and have highlighted the importance for researchers to understand the details of the institutions at the heart of our financial system.
