By most scientific accounts, the Holocene age has ended and we are now in the midst of a relatively new age called the Anthropocene- the geological era when man has become a significant geological and morphological force on the earth. I would argue that one of the best examples of this new geological era is the project that led to "a land divided, the world united"-the Panama Canal. It is the economic history of this project that Noel Maurer and Carlos Yu document in their book The Big Ditch: How America Took, Built, Ran, and Ultimately Gave Away the Panama Canal.
