One can be forgiven for thinking the title to this little book a bit pretentious. It sounds as if it aspires to be something on the order of a developmental history of economics and morality from the birth of modernism forward. Reading it confirms that it is about how markets and morals have coevolved, and it actually harks back to pre-modern days. If this is not ambitious enough, consider the fact that Dan Friedman chooses as his method employing vignettes drawn from an interdisciplinary melange that includes history, anthropology, and biology.
