New Directions for Smallholder Agriculture

Smallholder-led agricultural growth can contribute to reduced poverty and improved food security. However, achieving broad-based, sustainable, and inclusive growth through smallholder agriculture remains a challenge. That challenge may have become more complicated given recent changes in the environment in which small-scale farms operate. Globalization, urbanization, and increases in disposable income have reshaped demand. At the same time, agricultural value chains have become more formalized, integrated, and modern. The changes on both the demand and supply sides present new challenges, but also provide new opportunities for smallholder farmers.
