On any given day, someone could have his picture snapped by a security camera linked to face recognition software, grocery purchases recorded when he presents a supermarket's bonus card to get a discount, voyages in cyberspace traced by a search engine, and his location determined by the software in his cell phone. One byproduct of the information revolution has been an exponential expansion of the collection of personal data. Furthermore, it is not just collection that can pose a problem, but what happens afterward when the data is passed on to third parties and aggregated, mined, and recombined.
