Design Studies: A Reader

Yet another reader. As Penny Sparke noted in her review of The Design Culture Reader edited by Ben Highmore (Routledge, 2008), design-related readers seem to be in vogue at the moment. So much so that the Design Studies Forum is organizing a panel devoted to this phenomenon at the College Art Association Annual Meeting in Chicago (February 2010), asking what their simultaneous emergence entails for the field of design studies. The knee-jerk response is that the production of readers can be interpreted either as an attempt at constructing a literary canon where none has emerged in the conventional manner, that is as a result of sedimentation throughout a lengthy disciplinary development, or as an attempt to compile an easily accessible 'best of' collection sampled from a literature that has grown too large and dispersed for any individual student to survey.
