Architecture's Desire: Reading the Late Avant- Garde

What is anything when threatened with its own dissolution? Is it more itself, or is it something else? These are questions asked by K. Michael Hays in Architecture's Desire, a Lacanian review of the most recent history of experimental architecture-the kind of architecture threatened with dissolution. Hays takes for his focus a field of 'socially symbolic production whose primary task is the construction of concepts and subject positions rather than the making of things. Rather than analysing forms and their results, Hays analyses the intended psychological impacts, and underpinning theoretical motivations suffusing the projected ontologies of a particular group of radical architects (p. 1).
