The element (SG) which directly affects the compression ratio is driven by an electric actuator (A) to which signals are supplied from sensors of engine load (L), rotational speed (N) and fuel quality (Q). - Transitory changes in these signals are suppressed by blocking devices (S1-S3) so that only meaningful variations are effective in the prodn. of outputs from a characteristic memory (KS) to a store (SP) for comparison (V) with the signal from a compression-ratio sensor (VF).
