Having recently relocated to my town of birth after almost a decade in London, I find myself frequently lost, and at a loss. Rio de Janeiro's public transport system is a puzzling network of metro lines, buses, trains, vans and trams, made all the more inscrutable by the fact that no centralized system of communication exists to help commuters navigate. At a Rio bus stop you are, most of the time, simply alone to find out which buses cover the area and their itinerary. And finding out consists mainly of probing passers-by and drivers, if you can speak the language or get hold of zapping buses. Readers acquainted with London, its comprehensive public transport system and integrated communication devices will understand my loss and frustration when comparing the two experiences. Delays on the Northern Line apart, London's transport system works, and, more importantly for this review, it does communicate very effectively how to get from A to Z.
