Alois Riegl in Vienna 1875-1905: An Institutional Biography

Why is Alois Riegl seemingly always an art historian rather than a design historian? Despite that much of his scholarship focused on the applied arts or Kunstgewerbe, and despite that he spent the majority of his career employed at Vienna's pioneering design museum, the Osterreichisches Museum fur Kunst und Industrie, most of the extensive literature about this towering figure has been written from the disciplinary perspective of (fine) art history and as such has done little to identify his place in the development of design scholarship and design museums. The reasons for this omission have to do, no doubt, with both the margin-alization of design within academic art history and the recent tendency within design history to mark its own disciplinary origins in the late twentieth century while neglecting earlier manifestations.
