Swedish Design: A History

Originally published in Swedish, Lasse Brunnstrom's Swedish Design: A History has been slightly revised for distribution in English. The book is based on the author's lectures to design students about the history of their discipline, and incorporates primary and secondary sources. In writing a national design history, the author is keeping with other recent Nordic examples by arguing for the validity of such an approach, even though he may be criticized for idealizing national design culture.1 Brunnstrom's goal is to 'demonstrate that Swedish design has a far more diverse history than is usually depicted' by exploring the interdisciplinary nature of design history and complicating previous celebratory narratives (p. 3).
